Beanfields Bean and Rice Chips with Sea Salt

by Anne Paddock

I love chips – all types. When I was a child, Fritos, Lay’s Potato Chips, Pringles, Doritos, and Tostitos were a regular part of my diet. It wasn’t until I grew up and learned to read labels that I realized chips don’t have to contain artificial colors, flavors and additives to taste good; the best chips – like the best foods – are those with the most natural and fresh ingredients.

My real “aha” moment came while living in Madrid when I tasted a potato chip that was made with olive oil (as opposed to vegetable oil). Earthy, crunchy, and flavorful, potato chips made with olive oil are truly one of Spain’s great contributions to the culinary world. Since then, I have been on a mission to find great tasting chips made with pure ingredients which led me to try Beanfields Bean and Rice Chips with Sea Salt. Who would have thought a chip made with beans and rice could taste so phenomenal?

DSC_0001Beanfields Bean and Rice chips with Sea Salt are tortilla chips made from a blend of black beans, navy beans and long-grain rice cooked in high quality safflower or sunflower oil giving the chips a great taste and distinctive crunch. One taste and you will not believe the chip is made from beans and rice; they are that good. Free of  peanuts, tree nuts, seeds, dairy, wheat, and corn, Beanfields Bean and Rice Chips are gluten-free, made from non-GMO foods, and certified vegan. Each 1-ounce serving contains 140 calories, 5 grams of fat, 4 grams of dietary fiber, and 4 grams of protein. There is no sugar or cholesterol in these delicious chips – just natural, wholesome ingredients combined to create an alternative to other chips on the shelf.Bean_Bags

The company also makes Bean and Rice Chips in four other flavors: Nacho, Pico de Gallo, Salt N’ Pepper, and Unsalted (with no added salt). Each flavor boasts the same nutritional attributes – no gluten, corn, dairy, nuts, or seeds – and are made from non-GMO beans and rice.

The chips come in 6 ounce or 1.5 ounce single serve bags and are available in stores in 22 western states and in the NYC metro area including one or two Fairway stores in Connecticut and New Jersey. They should be available on the whole East Coast in a few months followed by the rest of the country (see the company website below for a list of locations by zip code).

The chips can also be purchased on-line directly from the company. 12 6-ounce bags are $40 plus shipping ($8) or 24 1.5-ounce bags are $30 plus shipping ($6). When I received an order of the 24 1.5-ounce bags, there was a handwritten thank you note in the box from “The Beanfields Team.” But, really I should be writing them a thank you note for making one of the most delicious chips on the market.

Update May/2014: Beanfields has introduced two new flavors this month: Barbecue and Ranch. See the company website for more details.10154150_866996423327342_7070606635713870034_n
