Nature’s Path Qi’a Superfood Breakfast Cereal

by Anne Paddock

Nature’s Path Organic Qi’a Superfood Breakfast Cereal is more aptly known as Qi’a (pronounced Kee-ah), a trio of seeds and grains – chia, hemp, and buckwheat – full of plant-based protein, fiber, and Omega 3’s. Certified gluten-free with no added sugar or salt, Qi’a is also certified organic, non-GMO project verified, and vegan. Loaded with protein – 6 grams per 2 tablespoon serving – Qi’a also provides 4 grams of dietary fiber per serving with no added sodium.

Qi’a – meaning energy –  comes in three flavors: Original, Apple Cinnamon, and Cranberry Vanilla. The Original flavor has 1 gram of sugar per serving while the two flavored varieties have 3 grams of sugar per serving (derived from the fruit). Unlike most cereals, Qi’a is not a big bowl cereal. Two tablespoons of Qi’a are blended with 1/4 to 1/3 cup of liquid – water, almond, soy, rice, or dairy milk – depending on the desired consistency to make a small bowl of superfood cereal. Stir and wait a few minutes while the seeds and grains absorb the liquid. Eat as is (for the purest) or blend with a bowl of cooked steel-cut oats (my preferred method) with a sprinkle of cinnamon and/or dried fruits and nuts. Qi’a can also be added to yogurt, smoothies, and baked good recipes to boost the nutritional content.

Qia cerealQi’a is packaged in 7.9 ounce (7 servings) and 11.5 ounce (11 servings) resealable pouches. Available at grocery stores and health food stores nationwide, Qi’a costs approximately $8-9 per pouch. To purchase on-line, go directly to the company’s website: www.shop.naturespath.com where each 7.9 ounce pouch can be purchased for $8.59 or ten 7.9 ounce pouches for $79.90 (or $7.99 per pouch). The company also sells a variety pack containing three 11.5 ounce pouches for $24.57 ($8.19 per pouch). Shipping is free for all orders over $39. Other on-line retailers include www.vitacost.com and www.amazon.com.
