Executive Compensation at America’s Health Insurance Plans (2024)

by Anne Paddock

AHIP (America’s Health Insurance Plans, Inc) is one of those non-profits that most people haven’t heard of outside the healthcare lobbying world because the tax-exempt, non-profit organization is a 501 (c) 6 – a trade organization – whose members are health care insurance coverage providers  (insurance companies) who claim the organization is “committed to market-based solutions and public-private partnerships that make high quality coverage and care more affordable, accessible, and equitable for everyone.”  Sounds noble but I don’t know anyone who feels high quality care and coverage is affordable, accessible, and equitable for everyone.

AHIP raised about $78 million in 2024 with most revenue predictably coming from memberships dues ($41 million), educational programs ad engagement alliances ($24 million), and conference sponsorship and registration ($10 million).  Expenses are generally the same as revenue (although the organization has accumulated $25 million in net assets) with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($37 million), fees for services – primarily lobbying and consultants- ($16 million), travel and conferences ($8 million), office-related expenses ($8 million), and education and advocacy ($6 million).

146 employees received $37 million in compensation, which equates to an average compensation of $253,000.  However, only 103 employees received more than $100,000 annually which means there were some very highly compensated employees.  AHIP reported 12 of the most highly compensated employees received between $443,000 – $1.6 million in compensation in 2024:

  • $1,561,323:  Mike Tuffin, President and CEO
  • $1,109,553:  Julie Miller, Chief Legal/Admin Officer,Secretary
  • $  916,530:  John Mathewson, Chief Operating Officer (exit 5/2024)
  • $  838,917:  Jeanette Thornton, EVP
  • $  691,757:  Sohini Gupta, EVP
  • $  691,526:  Robert Traynham, EVP
  • $  639,704:  Thomas Amontree, EVP
  • $  626,224:  Mark Hamelburg, SVP
  • $  625,209:  Dawn Eshelman, CFO. (exit 5/2024)
  • $  506,816:  Aron Griffin, SVP
  • $  510,519:  Lashawn McIver, SVP
  • $  443,041:  Sean Dickson, SVP

The 12 employees listed above received $9 million in compensation in 2024.

AHIP made gross up payments or provided tax indemnification.

62 independent contractors were received more than $100,000 in compensation.  The five most highly compensated were reported to be:

  • $2.3  million:  Locust Street Group, of Washington, DC f0r advocacy
  • $2.2 million:  Wynn Las Vegas, of Las Vegas, NV for conferences
  • $1.6 million:  Reservoir Communications, of Washington, DC for advocacy
  • $4.3  million:  Forj Software Group, of Waukesha, WI for learning management system services
  • $1.4  million:  Diligent Heath Solutions, of Chesterfield, VA for insurance education call center

More than $4 million was paid to two organizations for advocacy (which appears to be lobbying).

In summary, AHIP is a trade organization for health insurance companies.  With a revenue stream of $78 million annually, AHIP spends most revenue on advocating or hiring organizations to advocate on behalf of its members:  health insurance companies. Employees are highly compensated with the average annual compensation over $250,000 in 2024, although the President and CEO received $1.6 million in compensation in 2024.
