Roots Market: Maryland’s Organic Gem

by Anne Paddock

Roots Market is Maryland’s premier natural and organic food grocer. With a passion for the food we eat, the people they serve, and the planet we share, Roots Markets are full-service grocery stores focused on the customer.

Independently owned and operated, Roots Market has two locations in Maryland: Clarksville, (very close to Columbia, 25 miles northeast of Washington, DC and 25 miles southwest of Baltimore) and Olney (just east of Gaithersburg and 20 miles north of Washington, DC). Similar to Whole Foods Market in many ways, Roots Market distinguishes itself as a full-service grocer that caters to the food enthusiast, and especially vegetarians and vegans.

While driving through Maryland, we decided to have dinner at a restaurant called Great Sage in Clarksville, Maryland (www.greatsage.com). An organic and vegetarian restaurant, we arrived at 7:00 pm without a reservation and the place was hopping with lines out the door. So, we added our name to the list and decided to go next door to explore Roots Market.  I could have stayed in the store for hours and here are the reasons why:

A wide variety of fresh, organic food and products are offered. The store is organized by department: fresh produce, grocery, baked goods, cheese, dairy and non-dairy, bulk, prepared foods, meat and seafood, wine and beer, supplements, and body care.1377594_10152017228301379_1366158683_n

The produce department is 100% organic.10311943_10152149104076379_971936362946136012_n Locally grown and prepared foods are stocked and emphasized. The specialty food selection is excellent.1377594_10152017228301379_1366158683_n The prices are competitive with a focus on providing their entire product range below the suggested retail price. However, organic, non-GMO verified, and Fair Trade food products cost more, as they do in any store.

The store caters to a variety of diets: vegetarian, vegan, wheat and gluten-free, organic, raw, paleo and gourmet.373_35657831378_6650_n There are no growth hormones or antibiotics found in the meat and dairy products.

New products on the market are often featured before they are nationally distributed or even in Whole Foods. I found a several products here that are not in Whole Foods or Fresh Market yet.

A variety of events  – wine, cheese, and specialty food tastings, talks, and celebrations – are offered weekly. Classes – Brew Your Own Kambucha, Tea 101, Basic Organic Gardening, Fighting Heart Disease and Diabetes with Food – for healthy living are offered monthly.

Fresh sandwiches made to order and a variety of prepared soups, salads, wraps, sandwiches, burritos, and more are available.485539_10152056998321379_1717658529_n A fresh, hot food bar is open daily at the Olney location. Event Catering – sandwich platters, bakeshop offerings, cheese and specialty platters, and prepared foods – is provided.

Both locations are open Monday – Saturday from 8:00 am – 9:00 pm and on Sunday from 9:00 am – 8:00 pm. To learn more about Roots Market, see the company website:  www.rootsmkt.com.
