Perfect Fuel Chocolate

by Anne Paddock

What do you get when you take two organic super foods:  dark chocolate and ginseng – and blend them together? The Perfect Fuel Chocolate Energy Bite: a single serving (0.5 ounce or 14 grams) raw super dark chocolate (74%) bar with no refined sugar made from five organic ingredients: cacao, cacao butter, coconut palm sugar, vanilla bean, and American ginseng (500 mg).

Made by Boston-based Perfect Fuel Chocolate, the Perfect Fuel Chocolate Energy Bite is gluten-free, soy free, vegan, kosher and powerfully delicious, with the only caveat: you have to like dark chocolate. Who knew that dark chocolate and ginseng could produce the perfect snack?

Perfect Fuel ChocolateThe benefits of eating dark chocolate – a positive effect on energy, circulation, blood pressure, stress, and circulation – have been touted by the experts for years. Add the joy of biting into a rich piece of intense dark chocolate and most people will swear dark chocolate makes them feel better. Made from cacao beans, dark chocolate is made by crushing and liquefying cacao seeds, blending them with cocoa butter (a vegetable fat pressed out of cacao beans), and blending it with a sweetener (most often sugar) and flavorings (most often vanilla).644342_538987756139354_984161109_n

Ginseng has been used to provide energy and prevent fatigue for years although many western scientists question ginseng’s therapeutic properties. Undeterred, many people – including athletes – rely on ginseng for endurance and recovery. Ginseng has many varieties and is grown throughout the world although most of the ginseng grown in America is done by Wisconsin farmers.PFC_05

The Perfect Fuel Chocolate Energy Bite contains 80 calories, 6 grams of fat, 3 grams of sugar, and 1 gram of protein. The sugar is low because the company uses low glycemic coconut palm sugar which has a GI (glycemic index – a measure of how quickly foods raise blood sugar levels) of 35, compared to sugar which has 60. The result: a dark chocolate bar that does not taste overly sweet.

Each bar is individually wrapped and is sold in packets (that contain 10 bars) for about $20. The packets can be purchased at a variety of stores – primarily in Whole Foods in the northeast and California – or on-line through the company’s website: See the website for a complete list of store locations.
