The CORE Meal

by Anne Paddock

Core Foods – based out of Oakland, California – was established by Corey Rennell, a self-confessed adventurer who traveled the world and learned two lessons along the way:  eat mainly whole fresh fruit and vegetables, and treat others the way you want to be treated. Sounds simple, but as we all know, the day-to-day demands of life often keep us from eating healthy and forgetting about the people we interact with each and every day.

Based on these two principles, CORE Foods was formed to make nourishing, great tasting foods in a not-for-profit (yes, you read that correctly!) that would always focus on health first. With a loan from Whole Foods Market, Corey launched the CORE Meal on Earth Day (April 22nd) in 2010. Five years later, CORE Meals are now carried in over 500 stores in North America.Core-Meal-Bars-Hearty-Oatmeal-to-Go

So, what is a CORE Meal? Some people may call them energy bars but a CORE Meal is so much more than one of the hundreds of snack bars on grocery store shelves. Made primarily of organic whole grain oats, raw nuts and seeds, dried fruit, and vanilla beans, CORE Meals are justly named a “Hearty Oatmeal To Go” although the meal is in the shape of a bar (and not in a bowl) for on-the-go ease. 00000953_l-1

High in protein (11-12 grams), fiber (7-9 grams), and fats from the nuts, seeds, and oats (19-21 grams), the CORE Meal bars are low in sodium (5-10 mg) with a natural sugar content of 6-13 grams per 3 ounce bar. There are no added sugars, syrups, salt, oil, flour, additives or preservatives in a CORE Meal.

There are three types of CORE Meals, all of which are organic, gluten-free, and vegan:

Walnut Banana: The CORE Meal Walnut Banana bar is made 8 ingredients (oats, walnuts, cashews, dried bananas, filtered water, raisins, flaxseed, and vanilla beans).CORE MEAL Walnut Banana

Almond Raisin: The Core Meal Almond Raisin bar contains 7 ingredients (oats, almonds, raisins, filtered water, flaxseed, organic beans, and cinnamon). The cinnamon is what elevates this bar to exceptional.CORE MEAL Almond Raisin

Cashew Cacao: Everything tastes better with chocolate and this bar is no exception. Made with 7 ingredients (oats, raisins, flaxseed, cacao mass, filtered water, and vanilla beans, the Core Meal Cashew Cacao is just plain delicious with the small rectangular chocolate chips in every bite. The emphasis is on the cacao in this bar and with only 6 grams of sugar, the flavor is all chocolatey oats and nuts.CORE MEAL Cashew Cacao

Each 3 ounce CORE Meal bar is $3.99 at Whole Foods Markets. The bars are in the refrigerated section (and can be in the prepared foods, raw foods, or the produce area, depending on the store so ask customer service for assistance if you’re having trouble finding them). The bars can also be purchased directly from the company at www.corefoods.com and then stored in the refrigerator or freezer. See the company website for more information and other products including CORE Meal Whey Bars.CORE_Meals_
