Joe’s Oat Patties

by Anne Paddock

There is something deeply satisfying about eating a veggie burger on a whole grain spelt potato bun with a slice of crispy green lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, and ketchup with a side of cole slaw.

Until recently, I relied on frozen veggie burgers but now use Joe’s Oat Patties Mix to make my own veggie burgers. Made primarily of five organic ingredients: oats, quinoa, dehydrated vegetables, sunflower seeds, herbs and spices, Joe’s Oat Patties Mix makes a wicked veggie burger high in protein, fiber, and taste but low in sugar, sodium, fat, and calories.

Veggie_BurgerJoe’s Oat Patties Mix can be made into burgers, “sausage” links, stuffing, or a “meat crumble” for tacos or a pasta sauce. Simply add 1 cup of hot boiling water to the mix, cover and let stand for 5-10 minutes, remove the top, and allow to cool.  Heat a non-stick skillet with a touch of oil, and then form your patties or links with either a large ice cream scoop or wet hands (I use wet hands). Place the burger/links on the hot skillet and cook 3-5 minutes on each side to obtain the desired texture.  If a “meat” crumble is desired for tacos, nachos, or a salad, simply pour the cooled oat mixture into the skillet and brown, using a wooden spoon to stir the mixture.Joe's_Oat_Patties_

Joe's_Oat_Patty_MixesEach mix (except the Power Protein which relies on quinoa) has the same foundation of ingredients – oats, quinoa, and sunflower seeds – to which the flavor is differentiated by a variety of organic herbs, spices, dehydrated vegetables (mushrooms, onions, garlic, bell peppers, carrots, celery, hot peppers), black beans, lentils, chia seeds, maple crystals, and cranberries. For instance, Wild Lobster Mushrooms which have a seafood-like aroma are used in the Sea Flavor mix. Vegetables, herbs, and spices provide a variety of flavors and allow the basic mix to take on a natural specialty flavor.

Made in Apopka, Florida by a family-owned business that believes in eating clean and living naturally, Joe’s Oat Patties Mixes are well-distributed in Florida at Whole Foods Markets and health food stores for about $6 for a 6 ounce bag which makes four burgers. The mixes can also be purchased on-line through the company website:
