Cookies by the Alternative Baking Company

by Anne Paddock

Indulge your inner Cookie Monster!

Cookies by the Alternative Baking Company taste like traditional cookies but contain no dairy products, no eggs, no hydrogenated oils, no trans fats, no cholesterol, no artificial ingredients, no refined sugar, and absolutely no animal ingredients.

What these gourmet quality cookies do contain are recognizable ingredients: organic unbleached wheat flour, fruit juice, unrefined cane sugar, chocolate chips, vanilla extract, cocoa, baking powder, baking salt,  peanut butter (made with only ground peanuts), cocoa, and a blend of palm, canola, and olive oil.

The humongous cookies are moist and chewy – the way a cookie is supposed to be. They are not low in calories, fat, or sugar: each 4.25 ounce cookie which measures more than 4 inches circular is really two large servings with 220-240 calories, 7-8 grams of fat (mostly unsaturated), and 12-19 grams of sugar per serving. But, each serving does have 3-5 grams of protein, 2-3 grams of dietary fiber, and 95-125 mg of sodium. It is, after all a cookie. And when we choose our cookies, we can choose wisely when we indulge in this special treat by choosing a cookie made with high-quality ingredients.

Based out of Sacramento, California (why are so many cool companies based in California?), the Alternative Baking Company makes nine types of original cookies:

  • Colossal Chocolate ChipColossal_Chocolate_Chip
  • Double Chocolate DecadenceDouble_Chocolate_Decadence
  • Explosive Espresso Chip
  • Luscious Lemon Poppyseed
  • Outrageous Oatmeal Raisin with Walnuts
  • Peanut Butter Persuasion
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip
  • Phenomenal Pumpkin Spice
  • Kandy Kane Fudge (Cookie of the Season)Kandy_Kane_Fudge

The company also makes four types of Muffincookies™ which are cookies that eat like a muffin – almost like a scone.

  • Amazing Almond Muffincookie™ with Anise
  • Applepie Muffincookie™ with Raisins
  • Blueberry Lemon Muffincookie™
  • Cranberry Orange Muffincookie™ with Walnuts

And, finally the Alternative Baking Company also makes a line of gluten-free, high protein, low-carb vegan cookies called One Smart Cookie™:

  • Chocolate Chip
  • Coconut Fudge
  • Peanut Butter Protein
  • Pecan
  • Cinnamon Burst
  • Pumpkin Delight
  • Lemon Dream
  • Holiday Mint

These cookies are smaller (read normal sized) at 2.25 ounces and rely on almond meal instead of unbleached wheat flour. These cookies are high in protein (7-11 grams per cookie), low in sugar (1-4 grams per cookie), and low in sodium (85-105 grams per cookie). The fat content is 23-30 grams per serving because the cookies are primarily made with nuts – almonds and pecans (most of the fat in nuts is monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, which have been shown to lower levels of LDL (the so-called “bad” cholesterol);

The Alternative Baking Company cookies are available at health food and grocery stores nationwide but can also be purchased on-line for about $2.70 per cookie for the original and Muffincookie™ through the company website (www.alternativebaking.com). There is a minimum order of 15 cookies (mix and match in groups of five or choose a single flavor) with shipping free in the US. The gluten-free cookies are $2.75 each with a 15-cookie minimum ( 3 packs of 5 cookies) with shipping free.
