Finally, a dairy-free alternative to Half and Half…..

For people contemplating eliminating dairy products from their diet, there are usually three roadblocks to success:  summer ice cream cones, cheese, and creamy milk in the morning cup of coffee. The plant-based community is making strides in creating delicious alternatives to ice cream, cheese, and milk by using various nuts (almond, cashew, macadamia, coconut) and legumes (pea) instead of cow milk but finding a nut-based milk that blends well with coffee has been elusive….until now.

Green Grass Foods of Bellevue, Washington has created a new product called Nutpods:  deliciously, wholesome dairy-free alternatives to Half & Half that are carefully crafted without high fructose corn syrup, carrageenan, soy, dairy, refined sugars or sugar alcohols.

Nutpods are primarily made of coconut and almonds mixed with purified water to which acacia gum (a natural gum consisting of the hardened sap of the acacia tree that acts as a stabilizer), sunflower lecithin (a by-product of the sunflower plant after the oil has been extracted from the seeds that acts as an emulsifier), dipotassium phosphate (a water-soluble salt that acts as a buffering agent to prevent coagulation), and gellan gum (a gelling agent used in plant-based milks to keep plant protein suspended in the milk), and sea salt.

With three flavors to choose from – Original, Hazelnut, and French Vanilla, the focus is on creaminess and not sweetness. There are no added sugars in Nutpods so you can choose to add your own sweetener if desired. All Nutpods are free from GMOs, gluten and artificial flavors/colors.

Nutritionally, a 1 tablespoon serving has 10 calories with 1 gram of fat, no sugars, and no sodium. The Hazelnut and French Vanilla Nutpods also contain natural flavors (as opposed to hazelnuts and vanilla extract which is probably the only criticism one could make of Nutpods). For those of us who prefer an unflavored coffee, the Nutpods Original works perfectly.

There are also a variety of other ways to use Nutpods including:

  • Use Nutpods as a base for soup or in any recipe (soup, pot pie, sauce, salad dressing) calling for milk or cream.
  • Pour Nutpods over whole grain oats, barley flakes, spelt flakes, buckwheat flakes, seeds, and dried fruit. Let sit for 10 minutes for a hearty breakfast.
  • Froth Nutpods for a delicious latte or cappuccino.
  • Add to chai tea fora warm afternoon pick-me-up.
  • Add to iced coffee or tea for a creamy, cool drink.
  • Take a container on an upcoming road trip or camping adventure.

Nutpods can be purchased at grocery stores nationwide. Click here to find a retailer. Or, purchase on-line directly from the company at where four 11.2 ounce containers are $14.95, twelve 11.2 ounce containers are $41.95, or a 3-pack (one of each flavor) is $13.95.  Nutpods are also available at
