Food For Life® English Muffins

by Anne Paddock

An english muffin’s most defining characteristics are its nooks and crannies but the ingredients to make this breakfast favorite are even more important because most of these round fork-split yeast-leavened breads are made with enriched white flour, sugar, oil, dairy products, and scary sounding ingredients (mono and diglycerides) which from a nutrition standpoint is not optimal.

English muffins made with white or unbleached flour lack flavor (which may be why so many people depend on butter to make it palatable) although there are consumers who would disagree (for people used to eating breads made with white flour, whole grain breads may taste heavier – but after eating whole grain breads for a month, many people prefer the whole grain option). It’s similar to the white rice/brown rice dilemma.  White rice is the default in most restaurants but once the palate gets used to brown rice (that contains the bran and the germ which provides fiber, vitamins and minerals), it’s hard to imagine going back to the flavorless, white version.

Whole grain english muffins are not only a healthier option (more fiber, vitamins, and minerals) but a more flavorful choice – especially when the muffin is made without sugar, oil, dairy products, and ingredients hard to pronounce?

But it’s not enough to see a label that says “whole wheat;”  consumers need to read the ingredients list because all the ingredients matter when choosing an english muffin.

Food For Life® makes seven types of english muffins with an ingredient list that will make you grin from ear to ear:
