Executive Compensation at UPMC (Pittsburgh)

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is a tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare provider with more than 90,000 employees that work in 40 hospitals and more than 700 healthcare-related clinics/offices and a 4 million member insurance services division (the largest medical insurer in western Pennsylvania).

The organization consists of hundreds of related/affiliated organizations (both non-profit and for-profit). This post addresses the executive compensation at UPMC Group, a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 that employs the largest number of employees (65,000) within the system.

There are 40 voting members of the governing body, 6 of whom are independent although the Form 990 (for the year ending June 30, 2019) reported more than 600 board members.

In 2019, PMBC Group reported total revenue of $15 billion, most of which came from net patient revenue ($8 billion) and other program services ($6 billion). Expenses totaled $15 billion (including $400 million in depreciation) with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($6 billion) and medical expenses, drugs, and supplies.

65,218 employees received $6 billion in compensation which equates to an average compensation of $92,000.  9,466 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation with the 190 most highly compensated reported to be:

The 190 most highly compensated employees received $128 million in compensation.

151 of the 190 (79%) most highly compensated employees are male while 39 (21% are female.  9 of the 10 most highly compensated employees are male wile 1 is a female. 18 of the 20 most highly compensated employees are male while 2 are female. 27 of the 30 most highly compensated employees are male while 3 of the 30 are female.

UPMC Group paid for first class or charter travel, travel for companions, and health or social club dues or initiation fees.
