Executive Compensation at Carle Health Care, Carle Hospital, and Carle Foundation

Carle Health is a vertically integrated healthcare system (health insurance, medical care, education, and research) with 8 hospitals and group practices that employ more than 1,300 physicians and nearly 17,000 workers in Illinois, Indiana, Washington, and North Carolina. Carle Health also encompasses a medical school (Carle Illinois College of Medicine at Methodist College) and a research Institute (Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute).

Based in Urbana, Illinois, Carle Health consists of nearly a dozen tax-exempt organizations and 14 related organizations taxed as a partnership, corporation, or trust. This post will report the executive compensation as reported on three tax-exempt non-profits:  Carle Health Care, Carle Foundation Hospital (its flagship hospital in Urbana, IL), and the Carle Foundation (the parent company). A brief synopsis of these three organizations is summarized as follows:

Carle Health Care (CHC)

CHC is a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation with about 2,000 employees. In 2021, total revenue was reported to be $301 million, most of which came from patient service and programs ($292 million). Expenses were $423 million with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($339 million), internal management fees ($38 million), and fees for services ($22 million).  The organization ended 2021 with net assets of -$11 million,

Carle Foundation Hospital (CFH)

CFH is a 433 bed regional care Trauma 1 hospital in Urbana, IL with about 5,400 employees. In 2021, total revenue was $1.2 billion, most of which came from patient care (net). Expenses totaled $1 billion with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($332 million), patient care supplies ($249 million), internal management fees ($196 million), office-related expenses ($74 million), and fees for services ($63 million).  The organization had $251 million in net assets at the end of 2021.

Carle Foundation (CF)

CF is the parent organization of the health care system with about 2,700 employees.  In 2021, total revenue was $556 million, most of which came from management fees ($337 million) from related organizations, investment income/gains ($143 million), and rent from related organizations ($64 million).  Expenses totaled $456 million  (including $60 million of depreciation) with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($194 million), office-related expenses ($73 million), fees for services ($43 million), interest ($32 million), and grants ($28 million),  Net assets were $2.1 billion at year-end.
