Executive Compensation at Carle Health Care, Carle Foundation Hospital, and Carle Foundation (2023)

Carle Health is a vertically integrated healthcare system (health insurance, medical care, education, and research) with 8 hospitals and group practices that employ more than 1,300 physicians and advanced practice providers and 16,000 workers in Illinois, Indiana, Washington, and North Carolina. Carle Health also encompasses a medical school (Carle Illinois College of Medicine at Methodist College) and a research Institute (Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute).

Based in Urbana, Illinois, Carle Health consists of 29 tax-exempt organizations and 26 related organizations taxed as a partnership, corporation, or trust. This post will report the executive compensation as reported on three tax-exempt non-profits:  Carle Health Care, Carle Foundation Hospital (its flagship hospital in Urbana, IL), and the Carle Foundation (the parent company). A brief synopsis of these three organizations is summarized as follows:

Carle Health Care (CHC)

CHC is a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation with about 1,800 employees, whose sole member is the Carle Foundation. In 2023, total revenue was reported to be $324 million, most of which came from patient service and programs ($322 million). Expenses were $449 million with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($352 million), internal management fees ($39 million), and fees for services ($25 million).  The organization ended 2023 with net assets of $40 million.

Carle Foundation Hospital (CFH)

CFH is a 453 bed regional care Trauma 1 hospital in Urbana, IL with about 5,400 employees. In 2023, total revenue was $1.4 billion, most of which came from patient care (net). Expenses totaled $1.1 billion with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($362 million), patient care supplies ($290 million), internal management fees ($212 million), office-related expenses ($85 million), and fees for services ($111 million).  The organization had $495 million in net assets at the end of 2023.

Carle Foundation (CF)

CF is the parent organization of the health care system with about 3,100 employees.  In 2023, total revenue was $575 million, most of which came from management fees ($451 million) from related organizations, investment income/gains ($36 million), and rent from related organizations ($71 million).  Expenses totaled $550 million  (including $69 million of depreciation) with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($228 million), office-related expenses ($123 million), and fees for services ($106 million).  Net assets were $1.6 billion (compared to $1.8 billion in 2022; the result (primarily) due to an intracompany receivable/payment settlement.
