Picos Camperos

Picos Camperos are delicious mini breadsticks with a crunchy exterior, a delicate center and the aroma of fresh-baked bread. A staple of Spanish culture, picos are used as a vehicle to eat cheese, ham (wrap the slices around), or dips but can also be enjoyed with soup, chowder, and nut butters.
Made of wheat flour, water, olive oil, yeast and salt, Picos Camperos literally mean “countryside tidbits” and were originally made by bakers who rolled the remains of their dough into finger-sized sticks as gifts for neighborhood children. Once adults discovered the tasty flavor and crunchy texture, there was no keeping Picos Camperos out of the house and thus a new industry was born.
José Andrés Foods (based out of Washington, DC) imports Picos Camperos from Barcelona where the mini breadsticks are made. At $4 per box (6.35 ounces), the breadsticks make a great appetizer (“tapas”) and can be used as an alternative to crackers. Visually, the breadsticks look like mini baguettes but these breadsticks won’t bend or break when used to scoop a dip or nut butter. To purchase on-line, go to www.joseandresfoods.com. José Andrés is currently offering a free bag of the company’s potato chips (made with Spanish potatoes, olive oil, and Himalayan Sea salt) with all orders, while supplies last. Hint, Hint: The chips are fabulous and addicting; unlike any other chip on the market.
