Shotwell Candy Co. Caramels

by Anne Paddock

Most caramel makers don’t try twelve different butters (before deciding which one to use) or heat pure cane sugar to temperatures above 320 degrees to create an authentic caramel flavor but Shotwell Candy Co. does. One bite into a buttery rich, creamy and chewy Shotwell caramel and you’re hooked, destined to become a member of a small group of friendly but committed caramel snobs who really can taste the difference between a caramel made the old-fashioned way (by hand) with high quality ingredients and the commercially made caramels made with artificial flavors.

Shotwell_Candy_Co_CaramelsShotwell Candy Co. of Memphis, Tennessee was started in 2012 by Jerrod and Lisa Smith who take pride in knowing that every single aspect of Shotwell Candy Co. was made by them – the recipe, the production methods, the logo, the packaging, the photos, the website, and the commitment to make their products by hand in small batches.shotwell_caramels

Named after Jerrod’s grandfather – L. Shotwell George – the company specializes in artisan caramels made with real butter, pure cane sugar, cream, light corn syrup (a moderately sweet syrup made from corn and seasoned with vanilla), pure vanilla, maple and orange extract, pure maple syrup, Ghost River Brewing’s Golden Ale, Kentucky bourbon, roasted fresh pecans, crushed Costa Rican Tarrazu coffee beans, carob beans, molasses and crunchy Celtic sea salt.

Shotwell Candy Co. caramels come in seven varieties:
