Veeps, Veeps, and More Veeps

by Anne Paddock

All you need to do is take one bite and you’ll realize you’re in Veep nirvana.

Meet Skipper and Sunny, the most delicious soft and chewy vegan peeps (hence, the reference to “Veeps“)  available this Easter season. Forget those incandescent yellow peeps sold in every CVS and supermarket in America. Sweet & Sara’s version is different and irresistible because of one reason: the ingredients.Skipper_and_SunnyVeeps are natural marshmallows made with tapioca syrup, vegan cane sugar, water, non-GMO corn starch, carrageenan (extracted from red edible seaweed), non-GMO soy protein, acacia (a plant), pure vanilla extract, sea salt, locust bean gum, organic confectioner’s sugar, organic chocolate, and natural yellow coloring (beta carotene, vegan glycerine), whereas Peeps are made with sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, yellow #5 (tartrazine), potassium sorbate (a preservative), natural flavors, and carnauba wax. The labels say a lot but the loudest message is in the flavor. Veeps just taste infinitely better with a rich natural vanilla flavor in every soft and marshmallowy bite.Skipper

It’s like the difference between a Hershey Milk Chocolate bar (which contains additives including PGPR (an emulsifier) and artificial vanilla flavoring) and a Theo 70% Chocolate bar (that contains 4 organic ingredients: cocoa beans, cocoa butter, sugar and ground vanilla bean). Ingredients influence flavor and consumers can tell the difference.Sunny

Sara Sohn, founder of Sweet & Sara is the genius creator behind Veeps. When she was a young girl, she had a pet bunny named Skipper, who holds a special place in her heart (she is the reason she went vegan) which is why she named her naturally white fluffy marshmallow bunny Veep “Skipper.” And, Sunny the chick (who is equally fluffy) with a natural sugar coating painted with organic chocolate is named in honor of her parents: Uhmma and Ahbba, whom she calls “Sunny” or “Sonny.”Skipper_and_Sunny_Veeps

Each Veep is about 3 inches long, an inch wide, and weighs an ounce. The company hand cuts every single Veep, makes their own yellow sugar by rubbing natural coloring into sugar and hand paints each bunny and chick with chocolate using a toothpick. Individually wrapped, Skipper and Sunny sell for $3.69 each or buy one of each in a packet for $6.89 from Sweet & Sara’s on-line store (www.sweetandsara.com).

For the next 5 weeks (or until supplies run out), the Veeps can only be found at Sweet & Sara’s online store (www.sweetandsara.com). See the company website for more information and to learn about other products (including Spring colored – blue, yellow, pink, and lavender – mini marshmallows and other marshmallow treats). All products are vegan, non-GMO, kosher, and delicious.
