BetterOats® Organic Bare Instant Multigrain Hot Cereal

by Anne Paddock

To make better happen every day.

BetterOats® is owned by Post, the third largest cereal company in the United States – a corporation better known as the maker of Honey Combs, Alpha-Bits, Fruity Pebbles, and Raisin Bran. In an effort to capture the more health conscious market (and for this the company should be commended), BetterOats® has recently introduced an unsweetened instant multigrain hot cereal made with seven ingredients:

  • organic whole grain rolled oats
  • organic barley
  • organic wheat
  • organic flaxseed
  • organic quinoa
  • organic rye
  • evaporated sea salt

Certified organic, BetterOats® Organic Bare Instant Multigrain Hot Cereal With Flax (how’s that for name?) has no added sugar, artificial flavors or colors, or preservatives. A unique hot cereal that combines five grains with flax seeds provides a fiber-rich (3 grams), protein filled (6 grams) breakfast with no added sugar. (Note:  the company does make a brown sugar version which has brown sugar as the second ingredient giving each serving 12 grams of sugar).

Simply pour the contents into a bowl. Add 2/3 cup of water (or your favorite nut milk). Stir and then microwave for about a minute and a half (note:  the company recommends 2 minutes) or simply add the liquid along with fresh diced fruit, dried fruit, nuts and seeds, stir, and enjoy a hearty textured rich breakfast muesli at room temperature.

The company uses a quote “To make better happen every day” which BetterOats® Organic Bare Instant Multigrain Hot Cereal with Flax does. Now, if Post would just stop making and selling Honey Combs, Alpha-Bits, Fruity Pebbles, Raisin Bran, and the other sugary cereals they would really be making better happen every day.

Sold in 42 gram (1.5 ounces) pouches (8 to a box), BetterOats® Organic Bare Instant Multigrain Hot Cereal With Flax sells for about $4.39 (about $0.55 per serving) and can be purchased at grocery stores where Post cereals are sold and on-line at www.vitacost.com.
