Magnificent Bedding: Yves Delorme

Talking about the thread count (the number of threads per square inch) of a sheet doesn’t generally get me too excited because there are so many other factors to consider when buying bedding including the type of cotton (i.e. Eygyptian, Pima, and Supima), threading, where the fabric is from, and the type of finish. Thread count simply doesn’t always represent quality – it’s like looking at a chocolate bar and considering the percentage of cocoa as the only factor that matters when in reality the type and quality of all the ingredients matter. Quick Summer Pasta Salad

A colorful pasta salad is the perfect meal on a warm summer evening especially when the whole meal takes less than 20 minutes from start to finish. Fresh, locally grown sweet cherry tomatoes are in season but any type of chopped tomatoes will work along with a sweet Vidalia onion, and lots of fresh spinach with whole grain pasta – but green zucchini, yellow squash, multi-colored peppers, and broccoli florets also make for a delicious pasta salad. Postre Sea Salt Caramel Lollipops

Say the word “lolly” or “lollipop” and visions of everyone’s favorite childhood treat – big, round, rainbow-colored, tangy, fruity-flavored multi-colored lollipops – comes to mind. Mitch Hedberg, the stand-up comedian once said “a lollipop is a cross between hard candy and garbage,” but he didn’t quite get it right. Sure, there are lots of lollipops made with artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives but the traditional, magnificent lollipop made with simple ingredients and no artificial anything is also out there for the taking. You just have to look. Read more »

Anything Is Possible

Before you pick up the book, Anything Is Possible by Elizabeth Strout, do yourself a favor and read My Name is Lucy Barton first. Both books stand alone as good reads but collectively these fictional stories are even better because the first book sets the stage and introduces a cast of colorful characters whose lives intertwine in the most bizarre ways in the second book. The Protein Craze

In our protein-obsessed culture, people spend enormous amounts of time thinking about how to consume as much of this nutrient as possible from animal sources. We’ve been conditioned to associate protein with muscle development, animals, and overall health but we need to step back and open our minds to both how much we need and where to get it. A generation ago, protein was associated with spinach (Where is Popeye of spinach fame when we need him?) but the emphasis is currently on getting protein from animal products. Why is that?
