Organic Beans by Fig Food Co.
FIg Food Company was started in 2009 by Joel Henry whose company’s mission is to improve the health of people and the planet by promoting the consumption of plant-based food. The company makes, sells, and distributes nine organic and kosher 100% plant-based soups (in microwavable BPA-free pouches) that are low in sodium and offer a healthy alternative to the sodium-laden canned soups on supermarket shelves. But, what most people don’t know is Fig Food Company also sources, sells, and distributes eight types of ready-to-eat organic beans with no added salt, preservatives, or flavorings. Just organic beans and water so the flavor is simply delicious beans.
Grown in North America, the organic beans include Chickpea, Small Red, Navy, Borlotti, Pinto, Dark Red Kidney, Black, and Cannellini . The beans come in a 15-ounce pouch that contains no BPA and is eco-friendly with 50% less packaging than a carton of the same size. Each pouch contains three and one-half 1/2 cup servings that provide 100-110 calories, 6-8 grams of protein and 5-7 grams of fiber. There is no fat, virtually no sodium (5-10 mg per serving), and only natural occurring sugars (primarily in the chick peas) making the organic beans a healthy, tasty addition to homemade soups, chili, salads, dips, and any recipe that calls for beans.
The unique (and eco-friendly) packaging also solves a problem we all experience from time to time: how to get beans out of a container without mashing them. More often than not, canned beans tend to condense and settle in the bottom of a can necessitating the use of a spoon or fork to dig the beans out, leaving many of the legumes smashed. This doesn’t happen with Fig Foods Organic Beans. Just tear open the top of the pouch and pour into a colander, rinse, and the perfect little beans are ready to serve.
Fig Food Organic Beans are sold at Whole Foods nationwide and select grocery stores. To find a store nearby, use the on-line locator service at the company website. Each 15-ounce pouch sells for $2.99. For more information on the Fig Food Company, go to the company website: www.figfood.com.
Helpful Hint: To find more recipes using beans consider The Great Vegan Bean Book by Kathy Hester. The recipes are easy, nutritious and delicious – especially the Coconut Pecan Blondies made with Fig Food Company’s Cannellini Beans – simple and scrumptious and no one will ever guess beans are the secret ingredient. And, the Pineapple Rum Beans over Coconut Lime Sweet Potatoes is an easy and yummy dinner dish that uses black beans (and I omitted the rum and reduced the cooking time down to 10 minutes). Finally, the Chocolate Summer Squash Cake made with Fig Food Company’s Cannellini Beans is moist, decadent and tastes sinful. – but isn’t. The book is available at bookstores nationwide or through www.amazon.com.
