Natural Food Colors, Sprinkles, and Sparkles

It’s that time of year when many of us start dreaming about cookies: rolled cut-out, springerle, snowballs, pinwheels, gingerbread, crescents and more. Most holiday cookies have some type of decoration which led me to start thinking about what I was putting on top of my cookies. As I went through my baking cabinet reading labels, I was surprised to learn that nearly all the bottles of food coloring and jars of sprinkles and sparkles contain artificial colors and additives  so I tossed them in the trash. I knew there had to be healthy alternatives out there so I set out to find food coloring, sprinkles and sparkles made with natural ingredients. Read more »

The Sili Squeeze

When Kristin Ahmer couldn’t find an easy way to feed her children pureed foods and smoothies, she decided to create her own patent-pending spill-proof design that keeps food in their mouths and not all over their clothes or surroundings. By combining the best attributes of a bottle and a disposable food pouch, Ahmer came up with the Sili Squeeze: a reusable pouch (made from 100% food grade silicone) that can be filled with purée, smoothies, and any ready-made snack like yogurt or applesauce. Storage Solutions: The Mason Jar

There are only a few products as useful today as they were 150 years ago and the mason jar is certainly among the elite group of old-fashioned products whose innovative design still stands strong. Invented by John Landis Mason in 1858, the mason jar was awarded a patent because the glass body with the 2-piece lid (the flat top and hollow screw-top lid)- provide a hermetic seal allowing fresh food – especially fresh fruit and vegetables – to be preserved for future consumption. The Mason Jar Glass

There are numerous styles of Mason Jar Glasses on the market but the Carson Home Accents Mason Jar Glasses are distinguishable from others in several ways. First, the glass comes in two sizes:  16 ounces (The Sipper) and 32 ounces (The Guzzler). Second, the metal lid has a cushioned hole in the center to fit the reusable acrylic straw (or any type of straw). Third, the glass has no handle so the jar is gripped with the hand making it easy to hold and a space saver in cabinets; and finally, the glasses are dishwasher safe and made in the USA – not that I have anything against China or other countries but I prefer to buy American made products whenever possible. Nora Fleming Platters

Everyone loves a celebration and especially a table filled with platters of salads, desserts, side dishes and more. Some platters in my cabinet are single purpose – designed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day or a birthday party – which means they take up a lot of space and don’t get used very often. So when my very thoughtful cousin, Nancy gave me a Nora Fleming platter this past week, I instantly fell in love with a serving piece described as “one platter….every occasion.” Read more »

FoMu Alternative Ice Cream

FoMu is not an alternative to ice cream – but instead, an alternative ice cream or what the company describes as “a new take on a traditional favorite.”  Dairy-free and vegan certified, FoMu is a hard ice cream made from either a coconut or nut blend base. The coconut base flavors are made with coconut milk – a creamy, natural and nutritious base that is sweetened with agave and unrefined cane sugar along with a trace amount of plant-based stabilizers (guar and xantham gum) whereas the nut blend base is made with almonds and cashews. Weck Jars

Weck glass jars have become an obsession in our home where we use them for drinks (juices, smoothies, iced teas) and foods (parfait, pudding, granola, salad, gazpacho) because they display content so beautifully. What can be more eye-catching than the lovely hue of fresh squeezed juice with floating slices of lemon….. or layers of colorful berries between yogurt or ice cream and crunchy bits of granola….or a wide mouth glass jar filled with sliced sweet red and yellow grape tomatoes, chopped avocados, diced cucumber, sweet champagne mangos and cilantro?
